Construction & Materials

  • Sea surface + field photo (Stari Grad)Gloss photo paper. Reflects the Adriatic surface; documents fieldwork presence.
This photograph was taken by me on-site in Stari Grad in September 2021.
  • Landmass (Illyrian coast + Italy)Matt photo paper. Subdued, non-reflective; creates contrast with gloss layers.
  • 5 mm oak-veneered plywoodRaised focal elements, including Pharos. Primary visual anchor.
  • 3 mm Baltic birch plywoodCoastlines, colony names, structural framework.
  • Textile-covered frame3 mm Baltic birch, covered with brand-colour textile. Integral to the panel.
  • Maximum layer height at certain points: 5 + 3 + 5 + 3 = 16 mm — this is the local peak of the relief structure, not the overall panel thickness. Total dimensions: 350 × 355 × 25 mm (frame included).

Composition

Subtle golden-ratio divisions guide the eye across land and sea, shaping how the viewer reads the panel. The proportional balance between the sea surface, the landmass, and the text blocks is not arbitrary — it follows a spatial logic rooted in classical proportion.

Navigation & Wind

As with all Pytheas-related navigational artworks, the Pharos Regional Panel also includes the Aristotelian wind names. Here, their presence is more subtle — represented through the three winds characteristic of the Adriatic region — but they remain an essential part of the navigational logic that connects every piece in the Pytheas series.

Edition Logic

Each Regional Panel Module is a numbered, editioned artefact. The numbering system follows the same logic as the Navigation Box Collection — named, numbered, no reprints.

Every production phase is documented: photography and video from cutting through assembly to final finish. The record travels with the edition.

Edition numbering reserved.

Pilot Station

Pharos is the reference module for the entire Pytheas route system. Its construction logic, layer sequence, and documentation standard define the template for all subsequent modules — Emporion, Ictis, Massalia, and beyond.

The QR layer embedded in the panel connects the physical object to the live Pytheas Connect map — bridging artefact, location, and digital record.
